How to use our products and what’s the difference between them?

Technical

Posted on 03/06/20

It’s really hard to get everything we want to say about our products into a mobile-friendly, social-media-optimised web page.

That’s especially true because we’re really proud of what we’ve made and have so much to say about each product. Given the chance, we’d be like excessively proud parents who don’t stop boasting about their children.

Understandably, we recognise you don’t have time and let’s be real, there are better things to do than listen to one of us, on a soap box, preaching about each of our products.

However……

A lot of people do ask us how to use the products they’ve bought. Others ask the difference between certain products. So for those who DO want more, I prepared the explainer below.

We have tons of new product development in the pipeline. I’ll make sure to always keep this post updated with our live catalogue so you can fall back on this if the product pages aren’t hitting the mark for you.

As always, thanks for stopping by.

Daily protection moisturiser

Product lowdown
This is an everyday, all year round moisturiser. We designed this product for the face, head and neck but it can be used on any part of the body. It does the job of a normal moisturiser but also protects you from skin-damaging UV rays thanks to SPF 30 and UVA 5*. Of all our products, it’s the one I would describe as being most like a cream, albeit a lightweight/non-greasy one. It doesn’t contain alcohol or fragrance to avoid clashing with your aftershave/cologne. Also, some people can find these two ingredients slightly irritating to their skin so we removed both because we want as broad an audience as possible to be able to use this every single day.

How I use it
I use this at the start of the day after my shower and shave, or whenever my skin feels dry/tight. It sounds extreme but I feel naked or exposed if I leave the house without it protecting my skin. As a moisturiser, it’s the perfect consistency for me – it absorbs quickly, spreads easily and makes my skin feel fresh.

Other quick facts
– Clinically and dermatologically tested
– Suitable for sensitive skin
– Available in 10ml sachet and 100ml tube
– Water resistant
– Reef friendly
– Blend of chemical and mineral filters
– Not tested on animals
– Does NOT contain: parabens, SLES or SLS

Daily repair moisturiser

Product lowdown
We designed this as an end-of-the-day moisturiser to repair the skin overnight. This product does NOT contain SPF or offer protection from UV rays. Think of it as nutrition and repair for your skin overnight. It contains some really smart active ingredients like Benzylidene (which works as a pollution neutraliser by binding to the many pollutants our skin is exposed to, preventing them from penetrating into the dermis and critically repairing UVB damage) and a natural, identical compound called 4-t-Butylcyclohexanol (which soothes the skin and provides relief from stinging and rawness). Again, we designed this for the face but can be used all over the body. The product is fragranced with a light and fresh linen smell and comes out almost like a light blue gel or mousse almost. It’s extremely lightweight, no matter how much you use.

How I use it
When I shower in the evening, I use this afterwards because I know I don’t need protection from UV rays. Personally, I quite like having the light/fresh fragrance on my skin. It’s not like you’d go to bed wearing cologne but this is a happy medium. This product is also great for me after shaving and sport because it cools and soothes the skin almost immediately.

Sun gels > High and Very High

Product lowdown
In very simple terms, these sun gels are our version of sunscreen. Whenever you would normally use sunscreen, try these. The product can be used on your head, face and body. To be honest, this was our hardest product to formulate and the one we ended up spending most time on from a technical perspective. We wanted to make a product that felt like a gel cream, that didn’t get trapped in men’s hair and importantly, has a light and non-greasy feel without the white cast left behind by many sunscreens. We also wanted to simplify the language (and choice) around sunscreen so we produced High and Very High. High is SPF 30 (UVA 5*) and Very High is SPF 50+ (UVA 5*). To create the grease-free glide of the products, we used a small amount of alcohol. This also creates what’s called ‘flash’ so the product doesn’t feel heavy or greasy in your hands afterwards and quickly disappears. Finally, this product has a fresh linen fragrance which we think is more male-friendly than other products.

How I use it
If I know I’m going to be outside in the sun for a sustained period of more than an hour or so, I’ll use the Sun Gels instead of the daily moisturiser. Whether that’s on a long walk, sitting by the sea or more vigorous exercise when sweating and I want to know I’ll remain protected and product won’t run into my eyes, I turn to the Sun Gels. Personally, I always default to Very High because it gives me higher protection for a longer period of time. This is down to personal choice and your own skin type but as a rule of thumb, if the UV index is between 6-11+, I would recommend Very High regardless of skin type. You can find the daily UV index where you are on any good weather app.

Casual UPF 50+ tee

Product lowdown
Clothing is an important and effective physical barrier between the sun and your skin. Our casual tee is a lightweight t-shirt that has the look and feel of an ordinary cotton tee with the added protection factor of a UPF 50+ fabric. The weight of the cloth is 145 GSM and it’s tightly weaved using technical fibres that allow less UV light through the fabric and onto the skin. This means we haven’t had to chemically treat the fabric to achieve our protection standards. So even if you wash the garment thousands of times, it will always protect you because the protection is in-built into the fabric technology itself. The fit is relaxed and we made the sleeves slightly longer than most t-shirts to protect more of your arms when wearing short sleeves.

How I use it
I’m lucky enough to have quite a few prototypes of this tee from the development stage. I phased out all other t-shirts from my wardrobe and these are the only t-shirts I now wear. I use them just like I would any normal tee but at least now I know that if I get caught outside in my LifeJacket t-shirt, my skin is better protected. The grey and navy ones are my favourites and both look great with jeans.

UPF 50+ long sleeve collared tee

Product lowdown
Clothing is an important and effective physical barrier between the sun and your skin. Our casual long sleeve collared tee is a lightweight shirt that has the feel of cotton with the added protection factor of a UPF 50+ fabric. Needless to say, the long sleeves and zip-up collar mean that your entire upper body and neck is protected. The weight of the cloth is slightly greater than our casual tee at 190 GSM (vs. 145 GSM) but otherwise, it uses identical fibres, the same weave pattern and isn’t chemically treated either (see above). The long sleeve collared tee has an athletic fit but isn’t figure-hugging.

How I use it
With jeans or shorts when I want to cover my entire upper body. Sometimes it’s too cold for a t-shirt but the sun is still strong and I don’t want to wear a heavy jumper. This is that perfect middle ground.

Active UPF 50+ tee

Product lowdown
Clothing is an important and effective physical barrier between the sun and your skin. Our active tee is a lightweight t-shirt that has the look and feel of a typical polyester training top with the added protection factor of a UPF 50+ fabric. The weight of the cloth is 125 GSM and it’s tightly weaved using technical fibres that allow less UV light through the fabric and onto the skin. This means we haven’t had to chemically treat the fabric to achieve our protection standards. So even if you wash the garment thousands of times, it will always protect you because the protection is in-built into the fabric technology itself. The fit is athletic and we made the sleeves slightly longer than most t-shirts to protect more of your arms when wearing short sleeves.

How I use it
This is the tee I train in. To be honest, I use it inside and outside. Like the casual tee, I have prototypes from the development stage that ended up taking over my gym kit drawer. If I was going outside and knew I might end up sweating because of exercise or training, this is my go to LifeJacket clothing option.

Wide brim UPF 50+ sun hat

Product lowdown
Protecting the head (especially for anybody with less hair up top), neck, eyes and face was extremely important to us as skin protection obsessives. To pass the standards we felt necessary to have a sun hat part of our offering, we needed to make a wide brimmed hat. This is the only hat shape that’s approved by British and Australian standards for sun protection because it needs the entire neck, face and forehead must be covered. For example, a cap doesn’t protect the back of the neck and would not does not meet the standards we feel are so important. Critically, the lab tests and standards seek to eliminate any possibility of UV light passing through the hat to reach your head. This meant we couldn’t use open mesh for ventilation so used extra eyelets instead. But even the eyelets had to be less than 3mm otherwise the hat would fail all its tests. We use UPF 50+ polyester fabric to make our hat and treat it for water resistance only. We haven’t had to chemically treat the fabric to achieve our protection standards. So even if you get it wet or wash the hat thousands of times, it will always protect you because the protection is in-built into the fabric itself.

How I use it
I’ve never been a hat person and don’t think I ever will be. But I started to take this hat away with me when we were developing the product to test it out. It’s amazing how cooling it is to get the sun off your head, face and neck. It makes it easier to read too. So, I mostly use this in direct and strong sun when by the beach, on the water or in the park.
